Østerende Ballum is one of the small villages in the Ballum area, set on the flat marshland of southwest South Jutland, just a few kilometres from the Wadden Sea. The landscape is defined by wide meadows, ruler-straight dikes and a sky that seems endless. For generations, farmers here have lived by the rhythm of the tides, and the characteristic thatched farmhouses and old marsh dwellings speak of a hardy coastal culture. From the dikes you can look out over the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and during migration season the sky fills with thousands of birds. Its closeness to Ballum Sluse, the island of Rømø and the national park makes it a peaceful base for walks, birdwatching and cycling along the dikes. Østerende Ballum offers no grand attractions, but an authentic sense of the Danish marsh, where silence, light and weather play the leading roles.
