Hjerpsted is a small village in the South Jutland marshland, set on a low geest hill close to the Wadden Sea in Tønder Municipality. From here the flat marsh opens westward, and on clear days the island of Rømø shimmers on the horizon. The village gathers around the whitewashed Hjerpsted Church, whose stepped-gable tower has guided local people for centuries. The surrounding area forms part of the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and every autumn vast flocks of migrating birds sweep across the sky. Farming, dikes and the characteristic marsh farmsteads still shape the landscape, while narrow lanes wind between the meadows. Hjerpsted makes a peaceful base for walking, birdwatching and drives along the west coast, where the tides endlessly reshape the shoreline.
