Sønder Sejerslev is a hamlet tucked into the low-lying Tønder Marsh of South Jutland, a stone's throw from the German border and the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea. Here the horizon runs unbroken across reclaimed polder land, laced with drainage ditches, grazing sheep and long earthen dikes that hold back the North Sea. Life moves slowly among the scattered farmsteads and red-brick houses, where the wind carries the salt of the sea and the cries of wading birds. The village makes a quiet base for exploring the surrounding marsh: the market town of Tønder with its lace-making heritage, storybook Møgeltønder, and the dike town of Højer all lie close by. In spring and autumn, vast flocks of starlings gather over the meadows in the spectacle known as Sort Sol, or Black Sun—one of Denmark's most unforgettable natural sights.
