Sandvig sits on the northernmost tip of Bornholm and is one of the island's most charming seaside towns. Together with neighbouring Allinge it forms a cosy holiday setting of cobbled lanes, old skipper's houses and low summer gardens that tumble down towards the coast. Its sandy beach is a rarity along this otherwise rocky northern shore, making Sandvig a favourite summer destination for families. From here it is a short walk to Hammeren, a dramatic granite plateau laced with hiking trails, heather and sweeping views over the Baltic Sea, and to Hammershus, northern Europe's largest castle ruin. Small cafés and smokehouses line the harbour, where Bornholm herring is still smoked over alder wood. The town grew from a fishing hamlet into a bathing resort for well-to-do Copenhageners, and that atmosphere lingers in its well-kept houses. Sandvig is a peaceful base for walking, cycling and swimming in one of Denmark's most beautiful corners.
