Ræhr is a small village in Thy in northwestern Jutland, just a few kilometres from the fishing town of Hanstholm and the churning North Sea coast. It sits in an open, wind-swept landscape of dune heaths, fields and plantations, close to Thy National Park – Denmark's first national park and one of its most untouched wilderness areas. The whitewashed Ræhr Church rises above the village as a landmark and speaks to the region's long history. From here it is a short journey to Hanstholm Lighthouse, the vast bunker complexes left from the Second World War, and the wide, empty beaches where the sea meets the land. Ræhr makes a quiet base for hiking, birdwatching and cycling along the coast, and the area is known for its dramatic light, rolling dunes and bracing sea air. This is the real, rugged Thy, where nature sets the pace year-round.
