Vigsø

Vigsø is a small coastal village on Vigsø Bugt bay in the Thy region, a few kilometres east of the fishing port of Hanstholm in north-western Jutland. It is known for its broad, pale sandy beach, which stretches beneath tall dunes along the North Sea, and for a large holiday centre that makes the place a popular summer destination. Behind the shore lies a rolling landscape of dune heath and pine plantations on the edge of Thy National Park, Denmark's first national park. Rusting bunkers from the Atlantic Wall are scattered through the dunes, silent reminders of the Second World War. Outside the peak season Vigsø is a quiet spot where crashing waves, wind and vast skies set the mood. Bathers, hikers, surfers and birdwatchers all value the area, and its clear night skies are among the darkest in the country.
