Kerteminde Fjord

Kerteminde is one of Funen's most beautiful coastal towns, a small harbour community wrapped around a working fishing port where the north Funen coast meets Kerteminde Fjord. With a population of around 6,150, it keeps the intimate, unhurried feel of a place still surrounded by farmland, its charming old streets leading down to a harbour where boats land the day's catch. Locals fondly nickname it 'Min Amandas by' — Amanda's town — and its blend of maritime life and easy character has long attracted visitors and artists alike. Chief among them was the painter Johannes Larsen (1867–1961), who lived here and captured the fjord's rich birdlife in his work; his home and studio now form the internationally recognised Johannes Larsen Museum, one of the town's cultural highlights. Nature is never far away: at Nordstranden the shoreline opens into wilder scenery, while the Fjord & Bælt centre lets visitors get close to the marine life of the surrounding waters, including fish and porpoises, through its research and exhibition work. History runs deep here too, with the nearby Viking ship burial at Ladby among the area's celebrated sites. Food is a genuine reason to visit — the harbour is known for fish straight from the boats, and buying freshly smoked fish is something of a local specialty and ritual. The town itself is free to explore, the Johannes Larsen Museum charges around 90 DKK, and a visit of about three hours gives time to wander the streets, walk the shore and sample the seafood. Relaxed, scenic and quietly cultured, Kerteminde is Funen coastal life at its most appealing.
