Vester Vedsted is a small marshland village in south-west Jutland, a few kilometres south of the cathedral town of Ribe and close to the German border. It sits on the edge of the Wadden Sea, Denmark's only UNESCO World Heritage natural site, where a flat landscape of marsh, dikes and tidal flats stretches to the horizon. The village is home to the award-winning Wadden Sea Centre, a striking thatched building that explains the rhythms of the tides and the millions of migratory birds that rest here. From Vester Vedsted, a low-tide causeway leads out to the tiny island of Mandø, reachable only when the sea retreats. In spring and autumn you can witness Black Sun, when starlings swirl in vast formations over the reeds. A Romanesque village church and wide meadows lend the place a calm, timeless mood. It is an ideal base for walking, birdwatching and oyster safaris.
