Tisvildeleje is a village and the coastal part of the town of Tisvilde on the north coast of Zealand, about 60 km north of Copenhagen in Region Hovedstaden. It is North Zealand's most popular seaside resort, with a beach known for its white sand and soft dunes stretching towards the forest of Tisvilde Hegn.
To the west the village borders that protected plantation, Tisvilde Hegn — Denmark's fifth largest forest — which is ideal for walking and cycling. Along much of the shore, large boulders serve as rock armour and groynes, and a sea wall protects a stretch of the coast. The town itself has a relaxed, summery feel, with cosy cafés, small shops and holiday houses, and it has drawn artists and writers for well over a century.
The beach is free to enjoy and rewards a half-day visit of around four hours; summer is best for swimming, and autumn brings the same coastline with far fewer people. A local favourite is to walk into Tisvilde Hegn to find the gnarled 'troll tree' said to have inspired H.C. Andersen. From Copenhagen, take the local train via Hillerød to Tisvildeleje, about 30 minutes from Hillerød.
