Spøttrup lies on the Salling peninsula in northwestern Jutland and is best known for Spøttrup Castle – one of Denmark's finest-preserved medieval strongholds. Built around 1500 by the bishops of Viborg, the red-brick fortress still stands with double moats, high ramparts and thick walls that speak of turbulent times. Today the castle is a museum, and its old halls, the herb garden of medieval medicinal plants and the peaceful meadows around the water draw visitors throughout the year.
