Skamlingsbanken

Skamlingsbanken is a sweeping range of hills in southern Jutland, rising between the towns of Kolding and Christiansfeld. Its highest point, Højskamling, reaches 113 metres above sea level, making it the tallest hill in Southern Jutland. The ridge stretches for two to three kilometres and was formed during the last ice age, when clay was pushed up from the Little Belt strait by an advancing glacier. From the top, walkers are rewarded with wide views across the Little Belt and the surrounding countryside. Skamlingsbanken is far more than a scenic viewpoint, however. It holds a special place in Danish history as a symbol of national identity south of the old border. During and after the disputes over Schleswig-Holstein, the hillside became the setting for great public gatherings, and it has hosted major national meetings since 1843. These assemblies helped rally Danish sentiment during a turbulent period, and monuments and memorial stones on the hill still recall those events today. Now protected as a nature national park, the area combines this rich heritage with open grassland, woodland and grazing landscapes that invite quiet exploration. Marked trails wind across the hills, and spring and autumn are especially fine seasons for hiking, when the light is soft and the paths are uncrowded. Access to the park is free at all hours, and it is an easy drive of about fifteen kilometres from Kolding.
