Haderslev Cathedral

Haderslev Cathedral (Haderslev Domkirke), also known as Our Lady's Church, is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Haderslev in southern Jutland. The town of Haderslev traces its earliest recorded history to the 1100s, and the church stands on a site that has held a place of worship for centuries. It is believed the oldest building here may have been of wood, later replaced by a Romanesque church built around the middle of the 12th century. When that early church was superseded, its granite blocks were reused in the foundations of the later building and remain visible in the choir, the west wall and around the northern door, offering clues to the shape and decoration of the original church. Over the following centuries the church grew into the imposing Gothic structure seen today, with its tall nave and choir. As the seat of the Haderslev diocese, it remains an active place of worship and one of the most important historic buildings in the town. Its long, layered construction history makes it a rewarding stop for visitors interested in medieval church architecture and the ecclesiastical heritage of South Jutland.
