Rødbyhavn sits on the flat coast of southern Lolland and is known as Denmark's southern gateway to the continent. The town grew up around its ferry harbour, from which the route to Puttgarden in Germany has carried cars and trains across the Fehmarn Belt for decades on the busy Vogelfluglinie corridor. It is here that the vast Fehmarn Belt Tunnel is being built, set to become the world's longest immersed road-and-rail tunnel, transforming the area with construction sites, new roads and ambitious plans. Despite all the traffic, Rødbyhavn keeps a calm, genuine feel, with low houses, wide skies and open countryside of fields and dikes.
