Oksbøl is a quiet town in Varde Municipality in western Jutland, surrounded by sweeping plantations, heath and dunes just a few kilometres from the North Sea and the seaside resort of Blåvand. The town is deeply shaped by the Oksbøl Camp, originally a military training ground that after 1945 became Denmark's largest refugee camp for German civilians fleeing Eastern Europe. That story is told today at FLUGT – Refugee Museum of Denmark, designed by BIG and opened in 2022, which links the site's past to present-day tales of people on the move. Nearby stands the medieval Aal Church with its famous frescoes. Oksbøl is a natural base for walking and cycling in the Wadden Sea National Park, trips to Blåvandshuk Lighthouse, and encounters with red deer in the vast state forests. The town offers shops, eateries and a cosy, down-to-earth West Jutland character.
