Odense Zoo is one of Denmark's most popular family attractions and one of the largest zoos in the country, home to more than 2,000 animals from around the world. Founded back in 1930, it has grown from a tiny collection into a modern zoo with a strong focus on immersive habitats and animal welfare. It is especially known for its African savannah, where giraffes, zebras and lions share sweeping enclosures designed to echo their natural surroundings, and for its impressive oceanarium, where sharks and rays glide through large tanks. Younger visitors are drawn to the children's zoo, which lets the smallest guests get close to gentler animals, while daily feedings and keeper presentations across the park give everyone the chance to learn more about the residents up close. One of the most charming things about Odense Zoo is its setting along the Odense River, which allows you to arrive in style: small river boats run between the city centre, near the Hans Christian Andersen quarter, and the zoo, turning the journey into part of the day out. That makes it easy to combine a visit with the other attractions of Odense, the birthplace of the famous fairy-tale author.
