H.C. Andersen's House in Odense is a world-class museum dedicated to the fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, in the city where he was born. The current museum, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, opened in 2021 and takes visitors on a journey through Andersen's life and fairy-tale world with innovative exhibitions, interactive installations and his original manuscripts. Its underground garden is inspired by the atmosphere of the fairy tales themselves.
The museum is part of a wider group of Andersen sites in Odense managed by Odense City Museums, which also includes the author's childhood home nearby — an easy addition to the same visit. Together they trace Andersen from his humble Odense beginnings to worldwide fame.
Plan about two and a half hours, and consider a Thursday evening for fewer visitors and later opening. An audio guide is recommended to get the most from the exhibitions. Admission is 175 DKK for adults and free for anyone under 18. The museum is at H.C.
