Nyborg Castle

Nyborg Castle (Nyborg Slot) on the island of Funen is one of the most important historic sites in Denmark and is often described as the country's oldest preserved royal castle. Established around 1170, the moated fortress was originally a square castle with corner towers linked by a curtain wall, guarding a key crossing point on the route between the Danish islands. For centuries it stood at the very centre of national politics. It was here that the Danehof — regarded as Denmark's first parliament — regularly assembled, and here, in 1282, that King Erik V Klipping was compelled to sign the country's first constitution, the håndfæstning that limited royal power. Few buildings are so closely bound up with the birth of Danish law and governance. Over the generations the castle was rebuilt and expanded, notably under later kings who used it as a royal residence. After periods of decline it has undergone extensive restoration and now serves as a modern experience centre that presents around 850 years of Danish history. Operated as part of Østfyns Museum, the site combines original medieval architecture with contemporary exhibitions, bringing to life the kings, assemblies and dramatic events that unfolded within its walls. Visitors can explore the historic rooms, learn about medieval power and everyday life, and understand why Nyborg was for so long a stage for the Danish crown. The castle keeps regular opening hours from Tuesday to Sunday, is closed on Mondays, and charges admission.
