Klitmøller

Klitmøller, better known by its nickname "Cold Hawaii", is a small coastal town on the exposed west coast of Jutland in Thisted Municipality, in the North Denmark Region. Home to only around 1,300 people, it lies about 11 km southwest of Hanstholm and 18 km northwest of Thisted, where the North Sea meets long stretches of dune and beach. Klitmøller was once a quiet fishing village, but its steady winds and curving, powerful waves have transformed it into one of Europe's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations, earning the Cold Hawaii name. On a breezy day the sea fills with colourful sails, and the surf culture spills onto the shore in the shape of surf shops, cafes and a laid-back, outdoorsy atmosphere. Even if you never touch a board, the wild, wind-scoured coastline is spectacular to walk, with big skies, crashing waves and clean Nordic light. Beginners are well catered for: local surf shops rent equipment and offer lessons, so you can try the waves under expert guidance. Access to the beach and coast is free, and the town works well as a base for exploring the surrounding Thy landscape. Allow around four hours to soak up the surf scene, walk the shore and, if the wind is up, watch the surfers in action; the best conditions are usually in the windier months.
