Hindsgavl Peninsula

The Hindsgavl Peninsula reaches out into the Little Belt near Middelfart on the island of Funen, forming one of Denmark's finest coastal nature areas. Across roughly 400 hectares, wild forest, open glades and coastal meadows meet the sea, creating a landscape that feels remote yet lies close to town. To keep the area open and biodiverse, herds of wild horses and cattle graze here year-round as part of a rewilding and nature-conservation project; visitors often encounter these animals grazing freely along the trails. At the heart of the peninsula stands Hindsgavl Castle. A royal fortress once controlled passage through the strategically important Little Belt from this site in the Middle Ages, but the medieval stronghold was later abandoned and demolished. The present manor house, an elegant Neoclassical building, was completed in 1784 and today serves as a hotel and conference centre. While the castle interior is used for events, the surrounding park and nature area are open to the public. Well-marked paths lead walkers through old-growth forest, past ancient trees and out to the coast, where the views over the Little Belt are among the best in the region. The strait is known for its marine life, and patient visitors may spot harbour porpoises breaking the surface offshore. Free and accessible throughout the day, Hindsgavl is ideal for hiking, wildlife watching and quiet coastal picnics.
