Gudhjem

Gudhjem is a small town and fishing port on the northern coast of Bornholm, the Danish island in the Baltic Sea, and with a population of around 725 it is often called the island's most picturesque spot. Its charm lies in the way its yellow half-timbered houses climb the steep granite slope in tight, winding lanes up to the church that crowns the hill, giving the town a tumbling, sun-warmed character unlike anywhere else in Denmark. Gudhjem is closely tied to Bornholm's famous smoking tradition, and its smokehouses still produce the celebrated local dish 'Sol over Gudhjem' – smoked herring served with a raw egg yolk, radishes and chives, named for the sun rising over the town. The little harbour is more than a pretty backdrop: it is the departure point for boats to Ertholmene and the fortified islet of Christiansø, a rewarding day trip out into the Baltic. Wandering the streets, visitors find galleries, ceramic workshops and cosy restaurants tucked among the old houses, reflecting the island's strong tradition of arts and crafts. It all makes Gudhjem a highlight of any tour of Bornholm, best enjoyed at a slow pace on foot. Visiting the town itself is free, and around three hours lets you explore the lanes, the harbour and the views. Be sure to taste an authentic 'Sol over Gudhjem' at one of the smokehouses, and if time allows, catch the ferry across to Christiansø.
