Grønhøj is a small village on the Alheden heath in central Jutland, roughly between Viborg and Karup. Though modest in size, it holds an outsized place in Danish history as one of the settlements founded by the Potato Germans (Kartoffeltyskere) — German colonists who arrived in the 1760s at the invitation of King Frederik V to cultivate the barren moorland. Their legacy survives at the venerable Grønhøj Kro, a thatched roadside inn that houses a small museum devoted to these hardy immigrants and the potato they helped make a Danish staple. The surrounding landscape is classic mid-Jutland: wide skies, plantation forest, and reclaimed heath threaded with quiet lanes ideal for cycling and walking. Visitors come for a taste of rural tradition, hearty inn fare, and a genuinely local slice of the region's settler story, far from the tourist crowds.
