Græsted is a small railway town in Gribskov Municipality in northern Zealand, surrounded by rolling farmland, forest and old village churches. The town grew up around the Gribskovbanen, the charming local railway that still links the region from Hillerød towards Gilleleje and Tisvildeleje. Its low, welcoming high street offers small shops, bakeries and cafés, and each summer the town becomes North Zealand's great gathering place for the Græsted Veterantræf, when thousands of classic cars, tractors and machines fill the surrounding fields. The setting is ideal for nature lovers: the vast Gribskov forest, with its lakes and trails, lies close by, as do the medieval Esrum Abbey and the shimmering Esrum Lake. From here it is only a short trip to the coast at Gilleleje and to the castle town of Hillerød with Frederiksborg Castle. With its calm atmosphere and easy reach of some of Denmark's loveliest landscapes, Græsted is a fine base for exploring authentic North Zealand.
