Faxe lies in south-eastern Zealand and is known far beyond its size for two things: limestone and beer. The town's landmark is Faxe Kalkbrud, a vast, chalk-white quarry where limestone has been dug for centuries. Here visitors can hunt for fossils from the Danian age themselves – corals, sea urchins and shark teeth locked in bedrock that is 63 million years old. Beside the quarry, Geomuseum Faxe tells the story of the tropical coral sea that once covered the region. The town is also home to the large Faxe Brewery, whose name is recognised on beer taps in many countries. Around the market square, cosy streets lined with half-timbered houses and small shops invite a stroll, while the medieval Faxe Church rises at the town's heart. Blending forest, nature and industrial heritage, Faxe makes a rewarding stop on any journey through the south Zealand countryside.
