Ebeltoft is one of Denmark's most beautiful and best-preserved old port towns, set on the central east coast of the country on the Djursland peninsula, with a population of around 7,400. It is best known for its old town centre of cobble-stoned streets and centuries-old half-timbered houses, an environment so special that plans for its conservation were begun in the 1960s by the city council together with the National Museum of Denmark. At the heart of it all stands the tiny town hall from 1789, often called Denmark's smallest, adding to the town's storybook character. Ebeltoft is also home to several notable institutions. At the harbour lies Fregatten Jylland, the longest wooden ship in the world, which took part in the Battle of Helgoland in 1864 and can be explored today. Nearby, Glasmuseet Ebeltoft is one of the world's first glass museums, showcasing modern glass art of the highest calibre, while the European Film College offers courses in filmmaking, especially for young people. Beyond the town, the area offers beautiful beaches and the nearby Mols Bjerge National Park with its rolling hills. Access to the town is free; the frigate costs 155 DKK and the glass museum 100 DKK, and with so much to see it is worth setting aside around five hours. Summer is ideal for the beaches and town life, while spring and autumn suit Mols Bjerge. The cobblestones can be challenging and the frigate has stairs. An insider tip is to visit the small brewery in town and try the local beers.
