Dragør Old Town

Dragør is one of Denmark's best-preserved old market towns, founded as a fishing village in the Middle Ages on the southeastern corner of Amager, just outside Copenhagen. It is the main town of Dragør Municipality, which also includes the neighbouring village of Store Magleby, where the municipal council has its seat. The town's great charm lies in its intimate maze of narrow cobblestone streets running between the characteristic yellow and white houses with red-tiled roofs, a townscape so distinctive that it feels centuries removed from the nearby capital. The harbour is still active with fishing boats and leisure sailors, and along the waterfront cosy cafés and restaurants make the most of the maritime setting. Dragør Museum, housed by the old harbour, tells the story of the town's seafaring past and its long connection to the sea. With its unhurried pace, sea air and photogenic lanes, Dragør is a perfect peaceful day trip from Copenhagen, easily reached by bus 350S from the city centre or by bicycle across Amager. Entry to the town itself is free, while the museum costs 50 DKK, and it is worth allowing a few hours to wander. Sunshine and summer show the town at its liveliest, and weekends bring more open shops. Do note that the cobblestone streets can be challenging for wheelchairs. An insider tip is to have lunch by the harbour and pick up an ice cream from one of the local stands before strolling the old lanes.
