Carlsberg City

Carlsberg City (Carlsberg Byen) is one of Copenhagen's most distinctive new neighbourhoods, created on the grounds of the historic Carlsberg brewery just west of the city centre. Where beer was once brewed on an industrial scale, the district has been transformed into a lively quarter that blends 19th-century industrial heritage with bold contemporary architecture, culture and gastronomy. Walking the streets, you pass preserved brewery buildings, ornamental gates and former production halls standing side by side with new residential towers, offices and cafes, giving the area an unusual mix of old and new at every turn. A highlight is the famous Elephant Gate, whose granite elephants have guarded the brewery for more than a century, seen against the backdrop of the modern architecture that has grown up around it. Today Carlsberg City is an open, walkable district rather than a ticketed attraction: access to the streets and squares is free and you can explore at your own pace. It makes a relaxed stop of around two hours, combining architecture spotting with a coffee or a meal at one of the local eateries. Located on Ny Carlsberg Vej in the 1760 Copenhagen V district, it is easy to reach from the city centre and pairs naturally with the other sights of inner Copenhagen.
