Bulbjerg Bird Cliff

Bulbjerg is a striking limestone cliff on the north-western coast of Jutland, rising some 47 metres above the waters of the Skagerrak. It holds a unique place in Danish nature as the only true rock formation in Jutland and the only bird cliff on the Danish mainland. Each spring and summer the pale limestone face comes alive with thousands of nesting seabirds, most famously the black-legged kittiwake, for which Bulbjerg is the sole mainland breeding site in Denmark. The cliff sits in the traditional district of Hanherred, close to the wild landscapes of Thy, and its dramatic profile has long made it a landmark for sailors and travellers. Just offshore stands Skarreklit, a slender free-standing sea stack that once rose from the water as a natural companion to the main cliff, a reminder of how the relentless North Sea continually reshapes this coast. The area is a paradise for walkers and birdwatchers alike. Footpaths run along the clifftops and through the surrounding heath and dunes, offering sweeping views over the sea and the chance to watch birds wheeling on the wind. Early morning is the best time to visit, when the seabirds stream out from the cliff to hunt over the water and the light is at its most beautiful. Bulbjerg is freely accessible at all hours, with a car park close to the cliff, and it lies about a thirty-minute drive from Thisted. For anyone exploring the untamed coast of North Jutland, this remarkable cliff combines geology, birdlife and coastal scenery in a single unforgettable spot. Bring binoculars and sturdy shoes, and allow time to follow the trails to the finest viewpoints above the sea.
