Ballen

Ballen sits on the east coast of the island of Samsø and is one of its most popular holiday spots. The heart of the town is its large marina, which fills each summer with sailors from across Denmark and beyond, while cafés, ice-cream stalls and fishmongers bring the quayside to life. The scent of freshly landed fish and smoked mackerel belongs here, as do the low, often thatched houses that recall the town's origins as a fishing village. From the harbour it is a short walk to broad bathing beaches and calm, shallow water that is ideal for families with children. Behind the town, Samsø's gently rolling landscape unfolds with fields, orchards and the island's famous potatoes. Ballen makes a fine base for exploring the island by bicycle along its softly winding lanes. With its relaxed mood, maritime charm and nearby nature, the town captures the quiet summer idyll many associate with Samsø.
