Viborg Cathedral

Viborg Cathedral (Viborg Domkirke), also known as Our Lady Cathedral, stands at the heart of the historic town of Viborg in central Jutland and is one of Denmark's most important churches. A cathedral has occupied the site since the Middle Ages, and Viborg was for centuries a religious and political centre of Jutland, where Danish kings were once acclaimed. The present twin-towered granite building, however, is a 19th-century reconstruction inspired by Lund Cathedral, replacing earlier medieval and later structures that had fallen into disrepair; its bright interior is celebrated above all for the large biblical frescoes painted by Danish artist Joakim Skovgaard in the early 20th century. Rising above the rooftops beside the lakes of Nørresø and Søndersø, the cathedral remains a landmark visible across the town and a working place of worship. Entry is free, and the church is generally open to visitors from mid-morning, opening slightly later on Sundays around services. Its combination of monumental architecture, colourful frescoes and lakeside setting makes it a natural focal point of any visit to Viborg.
