Vesterø Havn sits on the western side of the island of Læsø, far out in the Kattegat, and it is where most visitors first set foot, since the ferry from Frederikshavn docks here. The harbour is both a working fishing port and a relaxed holiday spot, where cutters land the celebrated Læsø langoustine and a smokehouse, ice-cream kiosk and small eateries draw people along the quay. Behind the waterfront lies a snug little town with the white Vesterø Søndre Church, bicycle rental and shops. The area makes a fine base for exploring Læsø's remarkable landscape: the distinctive seaweed-thatched houses roofed with eelgrass, the sweeping beaches and the historic salt works, where the island's salt is still produced in the traditional way.
