Vestermarie sits in the heart of Bornholm, southeast of Rønne, surrounded by gently rolling farmland and close to the great forest of Almindingen. The village grew up around Vestermarie Church, one of the island's distinctive medieval churches, whose whitewashed walls and sturdy tower rise above the fields and can be seen from far away. The area still carries the mark of old farming life, and nearby burial mounds and standing stones show that people have lived here since prehistoric times. From here it is a short trip to rocky coasts, sandy beaches and Bornholm's famous round churches, while the quiet lanes invite cycling and walking through one of Denmark's most beautiful island landscapes. Vestermarie is no tourist magnet, but that is exactly what makes it a peaceful base for experiencing the authentic, rural Bornholm away from the busy harbour towns of summer.
