Vallekilde

Vallekilde

Vallekilde is a peaceful village in the Odsherred region of northwest Zealand, near Hørve and only a few kilometres from the coast of Sejerø Bay. It is best known for Vallekilde Folk High School, one of Denmark's oldest, founded in 1865 by Ernst Trier in the tradition of the educator Grundtvig. The school's distinctive buildings, including its historic gymnastics hall, shape the village and testify to the popular-education movement that left its mark on the district. Around Vallekilde the gently rolling Odsherred countryside spreads out in fields, hedgerows and narrow lanes that invite quiet walks and bike rides. The nearby coast and the artists' colony of Odsherred make the area a fine base for exploring northwest Zealand. Vallekilde is not a busy tourist destination but a still place with deep cultural-historical roots and the atmosphere of Danish rural life and learning.
