Tranekær is a small, well-preserved village in northern Langeland, crowned by the iconic Tranekær Castle. The ox-blood red fortress has risen above the district for more than 800 years and is counted among Denmark's oldest continuously inhabited buildings. A large park spreads around the castle, with ancient trees, lakes and TICKON, an international sculpture trail where art and nature merge along the paths. In the village itself, low, brightly painted houses cluster around the winding main street, while the great Dutch-style castle windmill stands proud on the hill. The surrounding countryside invites slow walks, cycling along Langeland's quiet lanes and views over the rolling south-Funen landscape.
