Tønder Town

Tønder is a historic market town in the Region of Southern Denmark and the administrative seat of Tønder Municipality, set close to the German border and the low marshlands of southwestern Jutland. One of the oldest market towns in the country, it has a distinctive character shaped by centuries of contact across the border, blending Danish and German influences in its architecture and culture. The old streets are lined with well-preserved gabled houses, and the town is closely associated with the fine craft of Tønder lace, whose history is presented in local museums such as Drøhses Hus. Every August Tønder becomes the focus of the Tønder Festival, one of Denmark's largest and best-known folk-music festivals, which fills the town with concerts and visitors from across Northern Europe. With its intimate historic core, its border heritage and its position between the marshes and the frontier, Tønder offers a rewarding stop for anyone interested in cultural history and traditional craftsmanship. The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, and the surrounding Wadden Sea marshlands are known for spectacular flocks of migrating birds, including the vast starling murmurations locally called 'Sort Sol' (Black Sun).
