Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens — known to everyone simply as Tivoli — is an amusement park and pleasure garden in the very heart of Copenhagen, and one of the city's defining institutions. It opened on 15 August 1843, which makes it the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world, after Dyrehavsbakken just north of the city. More than 180 years later it remains Scandinavia's most visited amusement park, drawing well over four million guests a year.

Part of Tivoli's charm is the way it blends old and new. Landscaped gardens, ornamental lakes and historic pavilions sit alongside modern rides and a long line of restaurants and cafés. The park is at its most magical after dark, when thousands of coloured lights turn the gardens into a glowing wonderland. The seasonal transformations are a highlight in their own right — Tivoli is especially famous for its Halloween and Christmas seasons, when the whole park is decorated top to bottom and takes on a completely different character.

Getting there could hardly be easier: Tivoli sits right beside Copenhagen Central Station, a few steps from the main entrance. Adult admission is 155 DKK, with children aged 3–7 paying 70 DKK, and a separate ride pass buys unlimited access to the rides. Plan around four hours to take it all in. Come in the evening for the lights, and if you want a treat, seek out the bar at the Nimb Hotel inside the park.
