Thurø is a small, wooded island in the South Funen Archipelago, lying just east of the harbour town of Svendborg on the Danish island of Funen. Covering about 7.5 square kilometres and home to roughly 3,500 residents, it is linked to the mainland by a low dam and bridge across the narrow Thurø Sund, so that visitors can arrive by car, by bus or by bicycle without ever taking a ferry. Despite that easy connection, Thurø keeps the calm, green character of a genuine island, with rolling farmland, thatched cottages, sheltered coves and deep-rooted sailing traditions that still shape everyday life here.
The island's story is bound to the sea. In the 19th century Thurø was one of Denmark's great sailing communities, where local shipowners and captains built wooden schooners and sent them across the world's oceans. That maritime heritage still shows in the tidy skippers' houses, the small boatyards near the harbour and the forest of masts along the shore, where classic wooden yachts and modern sailboats lie side by side. The main harbour, Thurø Bund, remains a lively meeting place for sailors, and the sheltered sound around the island is a favourite training water for the local sailing clubs.
The natural jewel is Thurø Rev, a protected nature reserve on the island's southern tip. Here a low spit of grazed meadow and shingle reaches out into the sea, framed by salt marsh, wild roses and cattle that keep the landscape open. Migratory birds gather on the shallows in spring and autumn, and on a clear day the view stretches across the archipelago toward the island of Tåsinge and the green islets of Svendborg Sound. The rest of Thurø offers quiet woodland, Thurø Skov, laced with walking and cycling paths, along with several small bathing beaches where the water is shallow, clean and child-friendly.
A visit to Thurø is about slowing down. Many people come simply to walk or cycle a loop of the island, pausing for a swim, a picnic on the reef or an ice cream down by the harbour. The village and the main roads are easy to move around, but the reef itself is reached on grass and sand tracks that can be uneven and, close to the water, soft or wet, so sturdy shoes help and wheelchair users may find the outer spit challenging. There is parking near the nature reserve, and the paths through Thurø Skov are mostly gentle and well suited to families with children or to older visitors.
Late spring through early autumn is the loveliest time, when the roses bloom on the reef, the beaches warm up for swimming and the birdlife is at its busiest; summer evenings here are long, quiet and golden, and the water often stays calm well into the night. Even in winter the island rewards a bracing coastal walk, with the wind off the sound, the bare trees and the woods almost entirely to yourself.
Getting to Thurø is refreshingly simple. From Svendborg it is only a few kilometres to the east: you can cross the Thurø dam by car or by bicycle in a matter of minutes, or hop on the local city bus. Svendborg itself is easily reached by train from Odense, which makes Thurø a relaxed, car-free day trip and a perfect first taste of the gentle island life of the South Funen Archipelago.

Walk out to the tip of Thurø Rev at low tide for the best views across the archipelago toward Tåsinge, and bring binoculars for the migratory birds.

A few kilometres east of Svendborg; cross the Thurø dam by car or bicycle in minutes, or take the local city bus. Svendborg is reachable by train from Odense.
