Svinø is a quiet coastal hamlet on the southern coast of Zealand, set among flat farmland, reed-fringed shores and the low-lying land near Avnø Fjord. Once nearly an island, it is today laced with dikes, meadows and narrow lanes. The area is best known for Svinø Strand, a stretch of summer cottages and shallow beach popular with families, anglers and birdwatchers drawn to the rich wetland birdlife. At its heart stands Svinø Church, beside which lies a Commonwealth war cemetery holding Allied airmen who fell over Denmark during the Second World War — a carefully tended and moving place of remembrance. Away from the beach, narrow roads wind past thatched farmhouses and open horizons where sea and sky blur together. Svinø offers no crowds, only big skies, gentle cycling routes and the calm rhythm of rural Danish life.
