Set on the flat marshlands where the Skjern River meets Ringkøbing Fjord in western Jutland, Stauning is a small village whose name now carries international recognition. It is home to Stauning Whisky, an acclaimed craft distillery that transformed a former butcher's shop into a producer of floor-malted, peated single malts using local barley and rye. Just outside the village lies Stauning Airport, one of Denmark's oldest airfields, still busy with light aircraft and gliders drifting over the fjord. The surrounding landscape belongs to the restored Skjern Enge meadows — Northern Europe's largest river-restoration project — where migrating geese, otters and grazing cattle share vast reed beds and open water.
