Skælskør Old Town

Skælskør is one of Denmark's oldest market towns, with roots stretching back to the 13th century, tucked into the coastline of south-western Zealand in Slagelse Municipality. Set roughly 17 km south-west of Slagelse and 12 km south-east of Korsør, it grew up around a sheltered inlet that still shapes the town's cosy harbour today. The well-preserved medieval core is a pleasure to wander: narrow streets lined with colourful half-timbered houses open onto small squares and the waterfront, where fishing boats and pleasure craft come and go. Skælskør's most famous resident is not a person but a bronze pig that stands by the harbour — local tradition says that whoever scratches it behind the ear is rewarded with good luck, and generations of visitors have kept its ear polished smooth. Beyond its picturesque looks, the town has long drawn artists and craftspeople, giving it a creative, relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart from busier destinations. It is also home to the Harboe Brewery, one of the largest breweries in Denmark, a reminder that this small town has an outsized industrial history. Until the 2007 municipal reform Skælskør was the seat of its own municipality, and that sense of independent identity still lingers in its streets and harbour life. There is no admission charge to explore the old town, and a visit of around two hours gives time to stroll the medieval lanes, pause at the harbour and, of course, find and scratch the lucky pig. With its blend of history, colour, coastal calm and easy charm, Skælskør rewards travellers looking for an authentic corner of Zealand away from the crowds.
