Roskilde Cathedral, in the city of Roskilde on the island of Zealand, is a cathedral of the Lutheran Church of Denmark and the country's most significant church. For more than a thousand years it has been the burial place of Danish monarchs — some 40 kings and queens rest here in its chapels and sarcophagi, making the building a kind of gallery of Danish royal history rendered in stone.
Construction began around 1170, and the cathedral is one of Scandinavia's finest examples of Gothic architecture — a distinction recognised in 1995, when it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Each royal chapel reflects the taste of its own age, so a walk through the church becomes a walk through centuries of changing Danish style.
Roskilde makes an easy day trip: trains run from Copenhagen Central to Roskilde in about 25 minutes, and the cathedral is a ten-minute walk from the station. Adult admission is 60 DKK, and children aged 5–15 enter free. Come in the morning for fewer visitors and try to avoid church-service times. It pairs naturally with the Viking Ship Museum, only ten minutes' walk away.
