Padborg sits in southern South Jutland, just a few hundred metres from the German-Danish border, within Aabenraa Municipality. The town grew up around the railway in the early twentieth century and quickly became one of Denmark's most important border crossings and transport hubs. Today it hums with lorries, freight-forwarding firms and one of Northern Europe's largest transport centres, through which goods from across the continent pass. Despite its practical character, Padborg carries a strong historical resonance: nearby lies Frøslev Camp, a well-preserved Second World War internment camp that now houses museums and memorials. Cross-border shopping and the wooded, rolling hills of the Frøslev Plantation offer both browsing and walking. For many travellers arriving from the south, Padborg is the first taste of Denmark – a busy, unpretentious place where Danish and German culture meet in everyday life.
