Ølst is a small village in Randers Municipality, set in the rolling hills of central Jutland a short way south of Randers. The community gathers around the whitewashed Ølst Church, a Romanesque fieldstone church with medieval roots whose tower rises above the surrounding fields. Among geologists the area is known for the distinctive clay and ash layers beneath it, the so-called Ølst beds, which record volcanic ash laid down more than 50 million years ago. Today Ølst is above all a quiet rural settlement, where farms, a village pond and winding lanes meet an open, cultivated moraine landscape. Visitors come for the stillness, the wide views and the easy walking and cycling along small roads between hedgerows and hills. Randers, with its museums, tropical zoo and shops, lies only minutes away, making Ølst a peaceful base from which to explore the countryside of eastern Jutland.
