Nexø is the largest town on Bornholm's east coast and the island's principal fishing port. It faces the Baltic Sea and is often the first thing travellers see as the ferry from Køge or Sassnitz docks. Cobbled streets are lined with low houses built of the local yellow and reddish sandstone, a building tradition that gives Nexø a character all its own among Danish towns. The harbour still hums with working boats, smokehouses and seafood restaurants where the day's catch is served remarkably fresh. Nexø Museum recounts herring fishing, shipping and the town's rebuilding after the Soviet bombardments of May 1945. The town also makes a convenient base for trips to Balka and Dueodde, with their fine white sand beaches to the south. With its maritime life, cosy market square and nearby nature, Nexø offers an authentic taste of Bornholm.
