Medieval Centre

Middelaldercentret (the Medieval Centre) is a lively open-air museum that brings the Danish Middle Ages vividly back to life. Located at Sundby on Lolland, about four kilometres north-west of Nykøbing Falster on the waterfront of Guldborgsund, it is an experimental archaeological museum that recreates everyday life in Denmark during the late 14th and early 15th centuries.

At its heart is a reconstructed medieval market town, built as a typical Danish town of the period, complete with craftsmen's workshops, a market place and a harbour with historic ships and boats. The staff dress in authentic period costume and genuinely live and work in the houses, carrying out everyday tasks such as craftsmanship, cooking and weapons training. Rather than reading about the past behind glass, visitors step straight into it and can talk to the 'medieval' inhabitants as they go about their day.

The centre is especially known for its impressive collection of working siege weapons, including trebuchets, a ballista and a cannon, as well as smaller arms such as handguns, longbows and crossbows. Remarkably, all of these are built on site using tools and techniques of the period. Daily activities include live firing of the great war machines, archery, knightly tournaments and demonstrations of medieval crafts, making it a memorable day out for families and history lovers alike.
