Kastellet is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Northern Europe and one of Copenhagen's most atmospheric places for a walk. Built in the form of a five-pointed star, with bastions projecting from each corner of its pentagon, the citadel dates from the 1660s and once formed part of the ring of bastioned ramparts that encircled the old city. Today it is surrounded by moats and grass-covered ramparts that make a peaceful circuit for walking, running and picnics, while remaining an active military site. Among its landmarks is a windmill dating from 1847, which stands on the ramparts and has become an emblem of the fortress. Historic buildings line its interior, and the green banks change beautifully with the seasons. Kastellet lies close to the famous Little Mermaid statue on the waterfront, so the two are easily visited together. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily from 06:00 to 22:00, making it a rewarding stop early or late in the day. Calm, green and steeped in history, it offers a quiet contrast to the busier attractions of central Copenhagen.
