Hvide Sande

Hvide Sande — literally "White Sands" — is a lively fishing town strung along the narrow Holmsland Dunes on Denmark's west coast, built around the man-made canal that links the Ringkøbing Fjord to the North Sea. With a population of around 2,800 it is the fifth-largest fishing port in the country, and the working harbour is the heart of town: cutters unload their catch, and one of Denmark's biggest fish auctions sets the rhythm of the day. On either side the beach runs for kilometres beneath towering dunes, with powerful waves that make it a magnet for surfers and windsurfers, while the sheltered fjord side is calmer and popular for angling. The canal's sluice, which controls the exchange of water between fjord and sea, is a small spectacle in itself at high tide. In summer thousands of visitors fill the surrounding holiday-home districts; in winter the town falls quiet and shows its true face as a hard-working port. The area is freely accessible year-round. Buy fish straight from the boats or the harbour stalls for the freshest possible meal, watch the sluice in operation when the tide turns, and take time to walk the dune paths for wide views over both fjord and open sea. Hvide Sande makes an easy base for exploring the whole Holmsland peninsula, combining classic Danish beach holidays with an authentic taste of the North Sea fishing life.
