Hovslund Stationsby is a small station town in Southern Jutland, tucked into the rolling farmland of Aabenraa Municipality between Vojens and Rødekro. Like many Danish communities, it owes its shape to the railway: the main line linking Fredericia to the German border runs through, and the village gathered around its stop in the late nineteenth century. Today it remains a quiet, close-knit place of red-brick houses, hedged gardens and country roads that fade into fields, meadows and pockets of woodland. This is border country, a landscape marked by shifting frontiers and the reunification of 1920, and the surrounding Sønderjylland region rewards slow exploration by bike or on foot.
