Perched atop the dramatic white chalk cliffs of Stevns Klint, the tiny village of Højerup on eastern Zealand offers one of Denmark's most striking coastal settings. Its landmark is Højerup Old Church, built around 1300 and clinging to the cliff edge; in 1928 its chancel tumbled into the Baltic Sea as the cliff eroded, leaving a poignant ruin that has become a national symbol. The surrounding Stevns Klint was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2014 for its exceptional record of the asteroid impact that ended the age of the dinosaurs, visible in the famous fish-clay layer. Today visitors wander the clifftop paths, descend the long staircase to the pebble beach, and explore the modern Stevns Klint Experience visitor centre. Quiet, windswept and steeped in geology and legend, Højerup rewards slow exploration.
