Højby

Højby lies in Odsherred in the north-west of Zealand, a landscape shaped by Ice Age hills, fields and coastlines. The village gathers around Højby Kirke, a whitewashed medieval church celebrated for its vivid frescoes, which have told biblical scenes to the people of the district for centuries. Around the village stretches quiet farmland, while the nearby Højby Sø lake draws birds, walkers and anglers. It is a short trip to the market town of Nykøbing Sjælland and to the broad beaches of Sejerø Bay, where sunsets over the water have inspired Odsherred's many painters. The area forms part of Geopark Odsherred, recognised for its geology and its remarkable light. Højby makes a good base for cycling along peaceful lanes, visiting local farm shops and spending slow days close to forest, lake and sea in one of Zealand's most scenic corners.
