Hjedding is a quiet hamlet in West Jutland, just outside Ølgod in Varde Municipality, whose modest appearance belies its outsized place in Danish history. Here in 1882 local farmers founded Hjedding Andelsmejeri, the first cooperative dairy in Denmark—an experiment in shared ownership that spread rapidly across the country and helped shape the cooperative movement that still defines Danish agriculture. The original whitewashed dairy building survives and now houses a small museum, where visitors can see the old churns, separators and butter-making equipment that once transformed the district's milk.
